What personal belongings do I hold most dear?

What personal belongings do you hold most dear?

So, I sat staring at this writing prompt and rolled it around inside my head for a while. It was hard to come up with stuff that really felt “dear” to me.

My own stuff, the stuff I use every day, doesn’t really have a lot of deep value to me. There are a few things, though. I love my bed! I have stuffed animals that I got from friends that I still sleep with. I really enjoy my computer. There are certain clothes I prefer to wear when I go places. I have a collection of Día De Los Muertos sugar skulls that I’m really into!

When my Daddy died in 2010, I collected up his favorite WWII DVDs and took charge of them. I brought them with us when we moved to a new house in 2020. I hold on to them because they remind me of my father, and because I miss him, but I don’t watch them, because I was never terribly fond of them to begin with. They’re a connection to me and him.

I think that at some point I’ll gather them together and find a collector or movie buff who wants them, and donate or sell them, but that won’t be for a long while. Meanwhile, I’m going to hold on to them, and probably will watch them sometime this year, for old time’s sake.

I’m not crazy about jewelry — I just don’t feel comfortable wearing rings or bracelets, though I don’t really feel one way or another about necklaces — but I have a necklace from my late grandmother. It’s pretty simple: a little drum on a simple gold chain. I like that one and keep it, even though I don’t wear it very often. My grandmother always encouraged me to march to the beat of my own drum, hence the drum necklace.

I think the things that I love the most are the things that make me think of the people I love. I’ll see them again eventually, but until then, I have some things that remind me of them and make me feel closer to them.
